Episode 3. How to do Kindness to my Community

In this episode children take on a simple challenge. A letter arrives with a worrying message. Kindness has disappeared from the community. The children step in to answer a direct question. What does kindness look like in real life?

Their answers stay grounded in everyday moments. Kindness means including people who feel left out. Kindness means checking on someone who looks sad. If a child falls and gets hurt, help them up, bring tissues, and make sure they feel safe. Small actions carry meaning.

The children also speak about respect. No one deserves to be laughed at for making a mistake. Laughing when someone struggles leads to bullying and hurt. Kindness means understanding how another person feels.

One child shares a story about helping a sister after a fall from a scooter. Another speaks about helping people who live in poverty. Several talk about watching out for people who face danger. These reflections show how children connect kindness with responsibility and care.

The conversation ends with a hopeful moment. One child explains a dream of becoming a Garda. The reasons stay clear. A Garda should be friendly, brave, and smart. The role offers a way to protect people and help the community.

This episode forms part of the Listen to Us series. Children share their ideas about respect, safety, and how communities treat each other. Their voices show how kindness grows through simple actions and everyday choices.

This project is supported through the Daphne-CHILD programme, a European initiative led by Eurochild and Terre des Hommes and funded by the European Union through the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme. The programme supports grassroots organisations across nine European countries that work to prevent violence against children, while ensuring that children themselves participate in shaping solutions.

The campaign will culminate in an advocacy seminar on 15 May 2026 in Dublin, bringing together educators, policymakers, youth organisations and child protection professionals to discuss the key messages emerging from the project and explore how children’s perspectives can better inform policy and practice.

(0:00) I'm trying to figure out how to do kindness in my community because I got a letter saying that (0:05) there's no kindness in my community anymore. So I want a few ideas from you guys about what are, (0:11) what does, what is kindness? So kindness has been about where you, what's it called, (0:17) where you include people in and you don't be mean to them and if they're left alone make sure you (0:22) play with them. And if anybody's ever sad you have to ask them if they're okay.(0:30) Help people when they're hurt and when they're sad and play with them. If someone falls you have (0:37) to say they're okay and if they hurt their face you have to bring them into the toilet and get (0:43) tissue, wet tissue and put them on their face. Help poor people. To never disrespect people for (0:50) who they are. If anybody is ever sad you go over and ask them if they're okay (0:54) and make sure if everybody is okay. Be kind. Helping them. I helped my sister when she fell (1:00) from the scooter on her chin. My mum was at work and we were only with dad. She was trying to (1:07) balance and then she fell, the scooter went like that and then she fell on the ground. Like if (1:13) someone didn't know what to do and you laughed at them, don't laugh at them even if they don't know (1:19) what to do. Because how would they feel if you laughed? They'd feel bad and then they wanted to (1:26) cry and that's bullying. It is kind but they kind of just need to work a little harder. Some parts (1:34) of Ireland it's really nice but some can just be disrespectful. Because I want to help people and (1:41) I want to save people that are in danger. So you're going to be a guard when you grow up? You're going (1:46) to be a guard. That's amazing. Read them out for me. What does the guard need to have? (1:52) He needs to be friendly, brave and smart.
